The Botellon - Time for a crackdown?

In Alicante the state of the botellon may be forcing the sometimes raucous but always colorful bars of the el barrio to charge entrance fees or a one drink minimum.

Though I can understand why, it would be a shame for this to happen. The charm of the barrio is that you can enter into the pubs and bars for a quick visit and head off to another if you don't like the atmosphere.

Unfortunately, many people have taken to bringing their own drinking gear - mix, alcohol, glasses - down with them to the area which they then consume in the streets. This brings along other problems like an increase in litter and other waste accumulating in the streets.

Not sure what the solution is myself - drinks are cheap here in Spain, but they do tend to party for a longer period of time then in most places - often from 10pm to the next morning down in Alicante - so no doubt the price adds up.

One thing that was recently discussed in a podcast (in Spanish) over on Notes in Spanish was the fact that many of the people getting together still live at home, and that perhaps if they had their own places they could get together there first instead of in the streets.

This is the topic for another post, but the youth in Spain would probably do well to get themselves out of the house a bit earlier, if not for getting together before a night on the town but for other things that young people like to do - wink wink :-)
