Central Heating

Most people, when they think of Spain, tend to think of beaches, sun, sand and sangria. Why is it then that I have passed some of the coldest days of my life here on the white (cold) coast?

It wasn't something that I expected. To be honest, on my first visit to Alicante, I landed at El-Altet airport in February, having left the pouring rain and cold in both London and Vancouver behind, and laughed when the pilot said it was 17 degrees celsius outside (at 11pm).

But the fact is that I have passed the coldest days of my life here in Alicante. Why?

Well, it turns out that Alicante has a long history as a summer destination, and that most of the homes have no form of heating in place!

Some people have told me that the average temperature has also dropped, and that winters were never so cold, but there are many mornings when I wake up and can see my breath as I make my way to the coffee machine.

As a solution, aside from installing air conditioning, many people buy electric heaters or use butane powered heaters.

Happily the newer homes have central air conditioning and heating. Might just be time to find a new home!
