End of the Violence?

In what is excellent news for Spain should it lead to a peaceful end, yesetrday the Basque separatists declared a permanent cease-fire and pledged to step away from decades of violence, a major breakthrough that could end Europe's only current armed conflict.

It has been a while since I have posted on this site, but what a better way to start then with this news, that could be the beginning of the end of Basque terrorism.

This report sums the story up nicely.

The ETA, who have killed more than 800 people since 1968, have declared cease fires before that ultimately failed, however it is reported that this declaration uses the term 'permanent' and makes no conditions.

I certainly hope that this is true. The Spanish have their quirks, however terrorism shouldn't be one of them, and in this day and age there are far better ways to make progress in a democratized and peacful country than thru bloodshed.

In my time living in the Costa Blanca, there have been two bombings in the Capital of Alicante and one in Benidorm, from what I recall. They also bomed some gas stations in Madrid in early Decebmer, 2004, while we were there with some friends.

For all of Spain, lets hope this one sticks.
